Modern mankind has made the sad mistake of deciding to cook and/or otherwise process most -if not all- of what we eat. In so doing, we have destroyed much of the health-sustaining properties of our food. On top of that, the foods that we do tend to eat without cooking, we have contaminated with pesticides and other man-made chemicals that are also detrimental to health.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;One of the interesting things that you see as you review study after study after study is that the more we try to break food down into its separate elements to find out which parts we can use to cause health, the more we discover that the raw, natural food as a whole is much better at balancing the systems of the body and avoiding an over-stimulus in any one area.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Looking at study after study, it can become mind-blowing just how ignorant we are of the natural goodness that is built into the fruits and vegetables that the earth provides for us.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Another amazing thing that you see is that every time raw, natural, pesticide-free food is used as the major or sole source of food for people, they become much healthier and stronger than when they ate man-made, processed foods.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The basic rules for health and wellness all come down to doing what is right for mankind.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;1. Eat a variety of good, wholesome foods (raw whenever possible).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;2. Drink good clean water.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;3. Exercise regularly (ideally six days a week).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;4. Rest regularly. One day a week lay off the hard physical labors, and get a good nights sleep every night.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;5. Breathe (deeply) plenty of good, clean air. The best way to breathe deeply is to make sure that you blow out as much air as possible when you exhale.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;6. Get good doses of sunshine regularly.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;7. Think positive, happy thoughts as often as possible. That often comes from helping your fellowman.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;8. Give thanks sincerely and regularly.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;That's it! Those are the basics that have been proven time and time again in test after test as well as in common sense. Of course we could fill in much more detail as to what things are better for given times and situations, but the basics are still simple. I saw one the other day that I just had to laugh out loud about. It claimed there are two causes of cholesterol and that taking their little pill could save you from both of them.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;They said cholesterol comes from diet and from your family (genes). These two ideas have been perpetuated by many people (doctors and otherwise) who simply have not done their home work. And of course they are perpetuated by the people trying to sell you pills. The problem is that there is very little truth to these claims.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;What is Cholesterol?&lt;span class="fullpost"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Cholesterol is a very important substance required for health in the human body. Cell membranes are made up of cholesterol. Cholesterol is also used by the body to patch little rips in the blood vessels and arteries that are caused by free radicals. It is a type of fat, but not the type that causes your excess weight.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Where does it come from?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Your body makes however much of it that your body thinks it needs. You do not need to eat any cholesterol for your body to make cholesterol. How much cholesterol you eat has very little to do with your blood cholesterol level, or how much cholesterol gets deposited in your arteries. Even your genetics is not really connected to your specific cholesterol levels.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The human genome project has helped us to understand many things. One of those things is that genetics are only weak indicators of what may or may not eventually manifest itself in the human body. The environment that the cells of the body live in is by far the deciding factor. That's why it is important to keep a clean healthy environment for the cells of your body.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The real problem?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Cholesterol builds up in a body that has a lot of free radicals zipping around. Free radicals cause damage which the body then attempts to patch up using cholesterol. The more unhealthy you are the more likely you are to have high cholesterol.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The solution?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If you want to lower cholesterol levels all you have to do is to decrease free radicals. You need to get more more anti-oxidants and fewer toxins. In other words eat better. Exercise has also been shown to be important in reducing cholesterol.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Of course your cholesterol levels will not instantly drop when you start eating better. If you have high levels of cholesterol then your body has a lot of damage that needs to be healed. Cleansing and healing will take time. As the body recognizes that it has less damage it will decrease the amount of cholesterol in the blood stream.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;There are some foods that have been shown to help in speeding the healing process and thereby helping to lower cholesterol levels. A couple of those are oatmeal and walnuts.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;What about those pills?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The big problem with the pills is that you probably don't want what they will do. In fact studies have shown that many of those drugs actually cause an increase in arterial or heart problems. They cause a decrease of cholesterol without causing a decreased need for cholesterol. In other words they don't address the real problem. Study after study has shown that cholesterol is not the problem, it is a symptom of the problem. Of course cholesterol does become the problem (though not the root cause) when it eventually builds up so much that it clogs up an artery. Remember it is just trying to patch you up.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Confused about Good and Bad cholesterol?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;It is actually nonsense to refer to the two types of cholesterol that they like to talk about as Good and Bad. Your body needs and uses both. It is simply that they have determined in some of their studies that the ratio of how much of one kind of cholesterol that there is to the other can be an observable factor in some health problems. So they decided to call the one that you need the most of Good and the other Bad. Pretty silly isn't it.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Don't be confused. I Don't Think So!</title><content type='html'>Perhaps you have seen the news story. The story is that having the type of surgery that shrinks your stomach so you can't eat as much will cure diabetes. Unfortunately, like so many other news stories, the details of the study paint a very different picture than the news headline.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The study was actually done with less than 30 individuals under going surgery. This automatically means not much reliability because it is too small of a sample. The people in the study were in a special program. They didn't just get surgery. They were also taught to eat fruits and vegetables with plenty of fiber and to exercise. They also had sessions every six weeks to review how they were doing and to get additional coaching. &lt;span class="fullpost"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The individuals chosen for this study had only recently been diagnosed (the last two years) with diabetes. Therefore they had not yet progressed to the point where the pancreas can no longer do it's job. For people in this condition it is very easy, if one is diligent, to reverse this problem with proper diet and exercise.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The diabetes did not disappear because of the surgery. The diabetes gradually subsided over the next couple of years following the surgery as they followed a healthy lifestyle.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;It should also be remembered that these were individuals who had been extremely obese, and the ones who were able to reverse their diabetes where also the ones who lost the most weight. The surgery did help with weight loss.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The other thing that should be pointed out is that getting a little self control of portion sizes and taking your time when eating would be a much better way (and much less expensive) than surgery. The surgery will cost you around $20,000. Surgery does have complications. 1 in 1000 people die from the the type of surgery used in this study. 2 in 100 die from stomach stapling surgery. There are various other possible side effects associated with weight loss surgery. Repeated vomiting, acid reflux and nutritional problems.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If you have been diagnosed with diabetes, take the time to learn what proper diet and exercise can do for you.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This surgery did not cure diabetes. The lifestyle changes that occurred after the surgery is what reversed the symptoms. There were also people in the control group (no surgery) who also reversed their diabetes. The only reason the surgery group had more success is they were forced to limit portions while eating. Of course they also had more incentive to make lifestyle changes so as not to waste the pain (both physical and financial) of the surgery.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So be your own motivation for the good of your health and your pocket book. Limit portions sizes and eat more often to lose weight. Eat as many raw fruits and vegetables as you can. Fiber is important. Drink plenty of water. Get a good amount of rest every night. Think positive and grateful thoughts. Get on a reasonable exercise program. That is just a bunch of poppycock.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Listen carefully. Calories have almost nothing to do with weight gain or loss. Stating it another way, the number of calories that you consume has nothing to do with whether or not you gain or lose weight.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The basic formula that diet pushers like to use is â€˜calories in' minus â€˜calories out' equals weight loss or gain. There could be some validity to that argument if there was any way to actually measure it. Outside of making you live in a bubble, there is not. The diet pushers try to tell you that if you eat fewer calories than you burn up with living and exercise you will lose weight. The problem is it simply isn't true. The major flaw in the theory that anyone can see if they actually think about it is that they ignore how many calories you may breath, sweat, urinate, and defecate.&lt;span class="fullpost"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;We all know people who eat like a horse but still stay slim and trim. Why is that? Or maybe you're one of those people who eats like a bird and yet you still keep gaining weight. Everyone knows that the calorie myth doesn't work and yet still you hear it everywhere. Doctors, trainers, therapists, nutritionist nearly all continue to refer to calories (not to mention advertisements). It is mind boggling.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;It isn't how many calories you eat that matters. It is what you eat and drink. There are a couple of important keys to optimize weight. Drink plenty of water (about a gallon a day) and eat good clean natural food with plenty of fiber, and exercise six days a week (enough to work up a good sweat).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If you go on a calorie cutting diet, your body will actually slow down your metabolism and try to store more fat to help you survive through the famine. Since you have probably taught your body to do this more and more as you try different calorie restricting diet ideas it will be important for you to eat five to six small meals each day to let your body know that there is no more famine. Eat a good breakfast in the morning and then make sure you eat something healthy (preferably raw natural fruits and veggies) every three hours until about two hours before bed time.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Your body will use the fiber and the water you are drinking to clean out your system and start to get your metabolism moving again.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If you eat more calories than your body can use, but they are calories from good healthy foods with their fiber intact and you are drinking plenty of water and getting some exercise your body will use what it wants and needs and dump the rest. Of course if you over eat way too much you can bog the body down in trying to deal with way too much stuff. But eat reasonably and don't skip meals.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The human body is a wonderful machine. Let it do its thing.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Any time someone talks to you about worrying about calories, just laugh and turn away. Some say it is good for you, others say it is bad for you. So what is really the right answer for your health in relation to milk? Who is right?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Both sides of the argument are right. Did that clear it all up for you? No?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Well, lets go into more detail. It really depends on whether you are talking about store bought milk that is pasteurized and homogenized or fresh raw milk. Unfortunately if you are looking for scientific proof one way or the other there isnâ€™t much of it available for fresh raw milk. Most studies done on milk have only used the pasteurized and homogenized milk that we find in most of our grocery stores today.&lt;span class="fullpost"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Once the dairy industry discovered that homogenizing and pasteurizing milk led to longer shelf life and more available sales, they jumped whole heartedly on that band wagon. Having done so they even turned against fresh raw milk. That was mostly because the fresh milk tasted so much better it was cutting into sales. So they tried to vilify raw milk as containing bacteria (which it does). In time they succeeded so well that they even got the sale of raw milk banned in most places. Therefore there are very few milk studies that are done on raw milk.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Milk has many beneficial health promoting substances in it. Protein for building the body, calcium for building bones, vitamins, good forms of saturated fats for building healthy cells and helping to break down unwanted fat, and many others. Hence the slogan, â€œIt does a body good.â€&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;However, in reality that only applies to fresh raw milk. Here is why:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Pasteurization&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Pasteurization is the process of heating milk with the intent to kill bacteria. Whatâ€™s wrong with that?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Well when you heat milk it really takes a turn for the worst. Heat kills all bacteria eventually if you use high enough heat for long enough. The typical pasteurization method kills both good and bad bacteria in the milk. Raw milk contains lots of beneficial bacteria that is very good for digestion as well as enzymes that are healthy for the whole body. Heat kills not only bacteria but also the enzymes and the vitamins. That is why milk sold in your grocery store has to have added vitamins A and D. It is a feeble attempt to make up for what was destroyed using artificial means.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The problem is that the typical pasteurization method kills pretty much all of the good bacteria, but doesnâ€™t kill all of the bad bacteria. The good bacteria in raw milk will actually keep the bad bacteria in check. That is why investigators have found very dirty facilities serving raw milk without any health problems caused for those drinking the milk. On the other hand pasteurized milk with all the good bacteria destroyed has often been the cause of food poisoning. The bad bacteria is allowed to grow unchecked. Now and then you will see in the news stories about raw milk causing food poisoning, but none of them (not one) have every been verified. However there are hundreds of thousands of verified poisonings from pasteurized milk.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;There is another problem with heating milk. One of the arguments that anti-milk people make is that milk contains casein (a protein) that is what they make glue out of. I have often wondered if those same people also avoid potatoes and rice and many other grains that you can also make glue out of.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Well, anyway, when you heat milk the casein actually causes a binding effect so that two of the major benefits for which you are drinking milk (protein and calcium) are bound together and become mostly useless to the human body. Thatâ€™s correct, most of the protein and calcium becomes unusable to the body.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Homogenization&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Homogenization is a process where by they force milk through a membrane, sort of a sieve with microscopic holes. This process causes the fat globules to be broken down to a microscopic size so that they no longer separate from the rest of the milk. This keeps the cream from separating.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Unfortunately there is a nasty little side effect of this process. The fat globules are now small enough to actually penetrate the stomach lining as if they were a nutrient and enter the bloodstream. Each little fat globule also carries with it a resin or acid coating. This is perhaps the biggest problem with homogenized milk. There are excess free-radicals in your bloodstream that cause minor scarring and tearing of the sides of the vessels and arteries. The acid from these little fat globules eats away at these little cuts and opens them wider causing more sever damage. These sore spots are then even bigger targets for more free-radical damage. The body reacts to this danger by trying to patch up the wounds. The patching material it uses is what we call cholesterol. As more and more of this patching goes on, the arteries begin to become clogged by this build up of patching material. Stroke or heart attack is the result of this continued build up.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Some doctors even think that pasteurized homogenized milk may well be the major cause of heart problems in our modern world. Heart problems went from being almost nonexistent in the days before homogenization to now being one of the biggest threats to health in our modern world. There are of course other causes for stroke and heart disease, but believe it or not this is a big one.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Raw milk on the other hand avoids all these problems and provides good nutrition. Of course you do need to find a source of milk that is from cattle that are free from artificial hormones and anti-bacterial chemicals. The best source is from free ranging grass fed cows. Of course the grass should be grown organically.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If you can find this kind of milk it is a nearly perfect food. Some doctors have actually used milk as their preferred healing diet for almost any ailment.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;One other interesting note. Lactose intolerance is a problem for many people. But generally only with pasteurized milk because the enzymes that break down the lactose have been destroyed. Most lactose intolerant individuals can drink raw milk from good sources without any problem. The raw milk contains the enzymes necessary to digest the lactose. Of course if you are lactose intolerant you should only try raw milk in vary small doses until you are sure it is safe for you.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So if we drink milk as nature made it it can be a great boost to a healthy lifestyle. Even a multivitamin is better than nothing, but consider supplementing with Vitamin C and Zinc, both proven to boost the immune system.&lt;span class="fullpost"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Skin&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Your skin can often take a beating during the winter months. Inside your home or workplace, you'll be subjected to dry heat from electric, gas, oil or wood fire heating elements. Also, you may take longer and certainly hotter baths or showers. Outside your home you'll be subjected to dry, windy, wet or cold weather. Moving inside and outside from dry heat to dry cold can wreak havoc on your skin, making it dry, itchy, red, flaky and irritated. The skin on your face is especially susceptible to this problem. Use moisturizers and moisturizing lotions daily to keep your skin healthy and hydrated. You can also use a humidifier to add some much needed moisture back to the air in your home or workplace. Before the mid 1980's there were no anti-asbestos laws enforced in industrial countries. This over site caused blue collar laborers throughout the world to work with asbestos on a day to day basis for sometimes years on end. The result was hundreds of thousands of deaths from Mesothelioma.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Currently there is no cure for Mesothelioma, but there is hope. The blood can clot by means on internal (INTRINSIC) and external (EXTRINSIC) process.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Internal: is the INTRINSIC pathway of clotting inside of the blood vessel External: also called the EXTRINSIC is outside of the blood vessel; tissue injury&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The primary basis for injury is exposure of the collagen that is under the endothelial (basic surface cells) linings of vessels and tissues. Collagen is the major protein in the formation of bone, ligaments, tendons, and teeth. Furthermore it provides a higher tensile strength to blood vessels. The presence of collagen in the skin is what gives it its elasticity: wrinkles come from degradation of the collagen in the skin. The important concept here is not the eye or the skin; it is the vessels in the body.&lt;span class="fullpost"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;A blood clot can form from having an infection in the body, slow and turbulent blood flow to a vessel, bacterial endotoxins, formation of atheriosclerotic plaque (pre-existing), or stagnation of blood flow in a heart chamber. Atheriosclerotic plaques can develop from elevated cholesterol, smoking, poor diet, genetic predisposition, trauma, or lack of mobility (exercise is key in helping prevent clot formation).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Clots that form in the arteries, under higher pressures, are composed of platelet clumps that are bound together by fibrin protein strands. Clots in veins, under lower pressures are composed predominantly of red blood cells with fewer platelets, and contain a large amount of fibrin strands that are intertwined.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;As the injured area is exposed circulating platelets begin to clump together (aggregate) at the site of injury. These platelets then release what we can simplify as transmitters to summon more platelets. The unique event is that the platelets change their shape and structure to expose a special layer of PHOPHOLIPIDS. This exposure assists these proteins that require that particular surface. These proteins (coagulation factors) cascade together to form a mesh called FIBRIN (which holds platelets together in a clot)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;As this cascade continues it becomes very complex in regards to combinations of the other proteins involved.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;When a clot forms it is called a thrombus (an example is the Deep Vein Thrombosis; DVT). If this thrombus becomes dislodged and it flows through circulation it is now referred to as an embolism (and example is the Embolic Stroke). These clots once lodged inside of a vessel will cause a slowing of blood flow or an obstruction of blood flow. If blood is diminished then there is a lack of nutrient exchange. If the clot blocks blood flow completely death of cells and tissues is most likely to occur. If cells tissues begin to die, the organ that they are associated with will not function properly.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The manner in which blood blots form will dictate the preventative measures. Blood clots can form as a result of high levels of cholesterol, smoking, poor diet, lack of exercise, surgery, trauma, autoimmune disorders, cardiac arrhythmias, pregnancy, and birth control pills. You may not realize the benefits of eating a food that is not very interesting or exciting. There are ways to make boring food exciting. Aside from being boring they should be a part of your healthy diet. They contain an abundance of protein and fiber and are low in fat content. In addition they contain antioxidants and something called phytochemicals. Diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, cancer and inflammatory diseases can be prevented or minimized through eating phytochemicals. In particular black beans contain soluble fiber, which is effective in lowering the bad cholesterol (LDL) by up to 24%, in turn can lower your blood pressure. These beans can also keep sugar levels at a healthier level thus blocking the effects of hunger for diabetics. This concept may lead to a reduction or elimination for the need of insulin in the diabetics. Black beans are not the only beans that are chocked full of fiber- so are many other types of beans and peas as well. The most popular kinds of beans and peas include chickpeas (or garbanzo beans), lima beans, fava beans, kidney beans, black-eyed peas, navy beans, pinto beans and great northern beans.&lt;span class="fullpost"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Lentils are rich in many nutrients but are particularly rich when it comes to the B vitamins. Consuming sufficient amounts of B vitamins from food sources such as lentils and other foods can help to prevent heart attacks. Besides B vitamins, lentils are also very rich in protein, fiber and a variety of minerals such as ones that help support the strength of the immune system. Examples of these are copper, zinc and manganese. Iron is another mineral that lentils are rich in.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Miso is not a household food by any means but it is a very healthy one. Miso is a type of soybean paste that is often used as a seasoning for sauces and soups. There is a strong belief that antioxidants can reduce your chances of cardiac disease, cancer, and even high blood pressure.
